Who shouldnt be treated ?
• Ladies during pregnancy and for 3 months after
• A history of deep vein thrombosis ( DVT ) will require a detailed ultrasound examination, but options are possible.
• Those with allergies to adrenaline or lignocaine
• General poor health and immobility are problematic. Your own doctor can advise before consultation.
After treatment, where does the blood go?
• Only some of the superficial veins are closed off
• Many others carry blood to the deep veins
• These deep veins have working valves
• Blood return therefore becomes more efficient
What happens if varicose veins are not treated ?
• Varicose veins worsen over time ( many years )
• Discomfort and pressure may progress to pain & cramps
• Ankle swelling and skin discoloration occurs
• Eventually this can lead to open sores ( ulcers ) ( 2 – 5% )
What are the side-effects of treatment ?
• Laser treatment has had few reported complications
• For a few weeks some experience skin “tightening “
• Skin burns, nerve damage and DVT are all very rare
• Injection sclerotherapy can cause skin inflammation
• This rarely causes a skin ulcer ( which heals with a scar)
• DVT following liquid or foam injections is rare
• Occasionally ( less than 5% ) may get brown staining along the previous vein, but this usually fades with time
• Transient visual disturbance and headache occurs occasionally with foam sclerotherapy
What if non-surgical treatment is not suitable ?
• Some vein problems are best managed conservatively
• This will include compression stockings
• We have an experienced fitting service on the premises
• If surgery is your preferred option we will arrange referral
